27-1 October-November 2008

These past few days have been very busy with Halloween celebrating and essay writing. During the school week, Kendal, Jeremy, Bader, and I went to a place called Dragon Mart to shop for Halloween costumes. Dragon Mart is a massive warehouse-like building full of little shops selling cheap Chinese goods. They had just about everything from construction gear to housing furniture to clothing, food, toys, etc. We spent several hours there walking around trying to find things. I ended up buying two scarves, a hat, a head band, a pin, and a Chinese kimono all for only $25. Outside of Dragon Mart there is a huge fountain designed as a ball (meant to represent the world) and a dragon is surrounding the ball. Inside the entrance are three two-three story tall Chinese paintings. In addition to having great shopping, it also has great tourist attributes.

On Thursday night, we went to a "haunted" village in Ras al-Khaimah. The story behind the village is that many people used to live there but strange things started happening including unexplainable movement of items and deaths. The residents abandoned the village fearing jinn had taken it over. Jinn are sort of like alternate life forms that can't be seen but have free will and need places to live. They will often frighten inhabitants out of their homes. Anyway, when we arrived at the village, we discovered a fair amount of it was no longer abandoned; Indian workers had taken up residence in several of the buildings but a fair amount of the village was still abandoned. Some of the group did not want to explore the village because people were living there, but we ended up going. The first building we went into was an old mosque. I started to walk up the minaret to get a view from the top. Unfortunately, pigeons had taken up residence in the minaret, and I disturbed them. Needless to say, I got out quickly. The rest of the village was a lot of abandoned buildings. Of course, we all took turns hiding and scaring the others but overall it was just walking around an abandoned village. As what usually happens, we ended the night at a mall getting food before heading back to campus.

Friday morning I went riding at the Sharjah Equestrian Center. I road a Arabian mare named Alayona. She was really nice to ride but was just getting back into work after being off for several months. The trainer there wants me to ride her 3-4 times a week, I would really like to but without reliable transportation, I have no way of committing to that. I feel really bad because I have been wanting to ride and she offered me a horse, but I just don't see how I can get to the barn often enough.

After riding, I worked on an essay all day long until nighttime when several of us went to Jumeirah Islands to celebrate Halloween. We were supposed to spend the night at a house in Jumeirah Islands but after a very long series of events, we ended up back at campus two hours after curfew. I had to sign an undertaking (agreeing I was late) but these are really not a big deal. I was just glad to be back and be able to go to bed.

I spent all of Saturday sleeping and writing my essay, but I finally finished it. I also did some other homework, but overall it was just a day full of homework. Today I have class and was supposed to go riding, but I don't think I have a ride there anymore. After the weeekend, it will be nice to be able to relax later on.
