Sunday and Monday, 24-25 August 2008

Classes started Sunday, so I am back in school. Not really though, since one of the classes I had on Sunday was canceled, permenantly. I ended up only going to one on Sunday. Today I had three classes but only went to two of them because one was being held in a room that didn't exist. Only two people managed to find the right place. Needless to say, my schedule is very disorganized. I have dropped one class all ready and added another in its place. Tomorrow, I have to drop two more and add two different ones in order to fulfill my major requirements at home. I'm sure my advisor here is getting tired of constantly changing my schedule.

In the end, I should be enrolled in Arabic, Political Economy of the Arab World, Public International Law, Classical Islamic/Arab Culture, and the United States and the Middle East. Hopefully I can get into the right classes. My schedule was fine until they canceled my one class. Because of that, my other classes didn't work well with my major, so everything had to be changed. It is really a big hassle. We only have four days to add/drop classes, two of which have all ready passed. I had to send an urgent e-mail to my advisor at AU to get all my new courses approved to make sure they will transfer back well. Thankfully, the time difference allowed me to call her first thing in the morning EST. Once she approved of everything, I was able to send an e-mail to get my classes switched. On top of all that, I have assignments for a class tomorrow which have not been posted online yet, so I can not do them. I am very stressed for only the second day of class. Hopefully, things will start getting better. Only three more days of class this week!

Ramadan begins this Sunday I believe. Just when I'm getting used to everything, everything is going to change. Though, I must say, I am very upset over the westernization of the UAE. I experienced the same thing when I visited Egypt. Some things are obviously different, but on a whole, I don't feel like I'm in that different a place. KFC, Pizza Hut, and Subway are everywhere. The shopping malls are filled with western stores. All the movies are out of Hollywood. Maybe I just haven't been seeing the right parts of town, but this all seems just too similar to the US. I'm looking for something different and not finding it. My friends and I are hoping that we can find some out of the way towns that may still hold some original culture during our vacations. Only time will tell I suppose. Until next time...
